Common Questions New Truck Drivers Have About Their Career

Truckers are an important part of the nation's goods and commerce and they are part of the central backbone of the country. There is a lot to know and learn about being a truck driver and many new drivers have questions as they enter the training phases of their career in trucking. As you look for trucking companies hiring in your area, here are some common questions you may have before starting your new career as an owner-operator.

Is a Criminal Background Really That Big of a Deal?

Your criminal record can be very important and each company has its own emphasis and regulations in terms of charges, sentences, and jail time. A felony record usually needs at least seven to 10 years between the charges and your time of application to be considered by most trucking companies. Some misdemeanors can also disqualify you from employment if they are recent or severe enough.

Will a Poor Driving Record Cause Issues?

Yes, in many cases it absolutely is a problem. Truckers are driving an 80,000-pound vehicle that's nearly 70 feet long for long distances in a variety of conditions and situations. So companies look very closely at driving records and generally will not hire anyone with marks against their driving records. Usually a minimum of five to 10 years must have elapsed since a DUI or other serious driving charge before you can be considered for employment.
